So this is an app, especially for the windows-users among us (because all the cool apple-people have photo booth pre-installed on their gorgeous systems). As a windows-user, have you ever been in the situation that a collegue or a friend bought a new mac and surely he was showing off his new toy with the photo booth application? No more! From now on, you too can make crazy funny pictures like every mac user out there. Ofcourse, mac-users can also use this application, as it has some other effects then photobooth.
CrazyCam offers 33 effects like mirror-effects, fire, water, snow, rgb, ascii and many more (which were created by Paul Neave ). Just choose an effect on the left side, do a crazy face and make a snapshot!
UPDATE: There was a small update on the crazycam application. Some new features:
- choose the path to save your snapshots to
- new lay-out
- resizable (kinda)
More information about the update and future features can be found at my blog: matty.be
You can download the .zip file here: Download
If you haven’t adobe air installed yet, you can get it at Adobe !
Here are some sample snapshots our company-robot took:
- "The mirror effect"
- "The divide effect"
- "The quad mirror effect"
- "The ghost effect"
- "The steam effect"
- "The monochrome effect"
- "The ascii effect"

That’s a great app I am going to have to try it. The examples look great.
August 20th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
nice app, just wanted to ask if you can provide source code for the effects used. Working on similar application and would greatly appreciate any help on this.
August 22nd, 2008 at 2:32 pm
you can get most of the source code for the effects from www.neave.com like I said in the post. He made these effects.

good point these source codes are hard to come across so when they are presented to you as easy as they are here, its probably a good idea to get the programs and see how you like them.

Fantastic - just what I’ve been waiting for. Really neat little application. My favourite effect is ascii. Ha ha you smug mac fanatics!
October 29th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Excellent application, thanks for pointing it to us here!
November 6th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Ascii is the coolest thing I’ve seen since waiting 2 days for my mate’s PC to draw a fractal painting back in 1992!

Is there any way you can work on making these effects work with video? That would be great. And also, the graphics aren’t too good… the application goes black in areas without a lot of light.
November 18th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Thank you for all the replies, it’s nice to see people like this application.
To answer some questions:
These effects do work with video, and I’m working on a new release of crazycam as we speak. This will be a more mature version which will have some new features like recording video with the same effects, an image and video gallery and hopefully some improvement to the overall quality of the images and some of the effects (though I can’t promise this).
Maybe if I can find the time, I will also add “upload directly to flickr” but I’m not quite sure about that yet.
For the latest status and updates on crazycam, you can always take a look at my personal blog(http://blog.arten.be), where I try to post status updates on this project on a regular basis.

I have been using the first version and it is great. Glad to see that there is version 2. Looking forward to playing with it. Thanks for a great app!
January 8th, 2009 at 3:16 am
Wow this version is much better! Thanks friends!

January 20th, 2009 at 7:23 am
Maarten,
Thanks so much for the app. Im having fun playing with it..Right now Im hooked on the steam effect….I keep making what looks like homage to late 70’s early 80’s pop art. and music videos!
January 20th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Just downloaded this and had some fun. Nice work!
One question: does it save the photos anywhere??
January 20th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
Okay belay that! I found the crazycam folder in my Documents folder. Should have looked in that obvious place before posting. Hooray!
…now I have a problem to report: it only saved one of the videos I took. It has thumbnails for the other 4 but no video file… Is this a known issue?
In any case heaps of fun! I especially like “mini me”. 64 versions of the image each a fraction of a second after the last creating a cascade of movement. Very cool, I like.
January 20th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
Oh! Sorry for all the posts but…
It saves the photos with .jpg suffix on the filename but they are .png format. Luckily for me I use IrfanView which reports and automatically renames the files. Hm Windows Photo Gallery displays the file okay but does not report the filename/format mismatch.
January 21st, 2009 at 6:54 am
This looks crazy but it also looks like fun. I think I will give it a try. Thanks for all the cool photos and nice descriptions.
January 21st, 2009 at 11:25 am
Thanks guys for all the comments! I’m glad you’re having fun with it.
Probably there are still some bugs in there but I will look and see if I can fix some of those (especially the png/jpg thingie).
James: You can try and delete the crazycam folder in the My documents folder and see if that fixes the issues you’re having with video, this has never appeared here so I hope this will fix it for you.
RKMusiclife: You can get it at the adobe marketplace. Just click the install now button over there and it should start installing the application.

Wow! That’s really cool. I love effects with Webcams except that I never have had the capability bc I thought only certain webcams did this. I didn’t realize it was the software (doh!). I’m gonna check this out.

As Angela mentioned the zip file did not work, its the same with me just wondering if it my machine issue or file issue..
March 27th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
Mattres; it isn’t a zip file. It’s an adobe air file. You need to install the Air runtime first …
You can get it at http://get.adobe.com.
Thanks everybody for the replies! Really appreciate it

Hi! I am having trouble downloading CrazyCam. Even after I downloaded Adobe Air, the screen came up like this when I tried to download this program:
Address Not Found
Firefox can’t find the server at www.matty.be.
The browser could not find the host server for the provided address.
* Did you make a mistake when typing the domain? (e.g. “ww.mozilla.org” instead of “www.mozilla.org”)
* Are you certain this domain address exists? Its registration may have expired.
* Are you unable to browse other sites? Check your network connection and DNS server settings.
* Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy? Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.
How can I download it? Please and thank you!

Great Stuff! I am downloading it now.
April 19th, 2009 at 5:15 am
the zip file didnt work for me either.
April 20th, 2009 at 10:27 am
If you download the application as a ZIP-file, rename it to an .AIR-extension, that should do the trick.
April 29th, 2009 at 12:01 am

October 16th, 2009 at 8:32 am

December 16th, 2009 at 3:41 am
Cool app!
December 18th, 2009 at 3:24 am
The 1st version worked great for windows users of which I have to admit I still am. Haven’t broken down yet to learn Apple.
This newer version looks really cool and the monochrome capability especially catches my attention.
January 20th, 2010 at 6:52 pm
